The Listener

It's been a rough week. You have those too. When life is a bit scarey, you have no idea what will take place and you have no choice, but to wait for it to unfold. In the meantime,  you have to do the things. The things your thoughts could care less about at the time. Your mind imagines, guesses and tries to figure out, the endless possibilities tomorrow holds. Sometimes, you really need her. The one who will walk beside you, look deep into your searching eyes and say nothing. The friend who has large, concerned ears and honestly,  no answers. She walks close with you, attends compassionately and makes you feel heard. We aren't always looking for an answer, just someone to appreciate our questions. It might seem unproductive to some, but getting control of your racing mind and understanding your situation better is not useless. Rants, gossip and complaining are unproductive and useless,  but this isn't.  This is different.

We were given the Comforter for this purpose. The Paraclete, who comes alongside to counsel,  to strengthen and to comfort. He is always there and all we need. Grace gives us more than we need, because He is like that, so He sends us people to physically come alongside too. If we can be a paraclete, a helper to others, we are doing a Godly work...only it usually feels more like pleasure. It is a few steps better than sniffing the candles and touching the soft pillows at Winners...but I do that too 😉. These ladies are probably heading for Winners, but it really is more about the journey than the theraputic destination.

God sent me a couple of paracletes lately. A close friend from high school and another, a total stranger, with a few kind, penetrating words, as our lives briefly brushed shoulders through the business of town. You know when they are Godsent. They are an important part of our spiritual health and bring light and joy to those darker days...and saying very little means more than you can say.

"The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry."  Psalm 34:15
