Soar

We are all escape artists. When life gets tough, or we don't like the road we took, we look for a way out. Sometimes that's ok. Sometimes that's possible. Sometimes it's not. At times we are so stuck, so hemmed in that our human limitations, either physical or those of conscience, cannot give way and we have to just endure. There are innocent people in prison. That happens. Some people are stuck in difficult vocations, marriages or illnesses. Quitting isn't an option for them, because other, loved people, would be hurt if we quit, or the out door would swing hard and hurt worse on the way out. To keep going is the only option. Are we then prisoners of circumstance?

True freedom isn't really outside of us, it just looks and feels that way. That's why so many successful, wealthy and healthy people, commit suicide. Because inside, the iron bars are cold and locked. No amount of effort can pry them apart. When we find ourselves in these kinds of situations, we need to look to the eagle. He soars high and light. Open sky. This symbol of freedom reminds me that it is a state of mind. A perspective, not a physical thing.

I can be free if I learn to wait and to pray, no matter where I am. Sure, it may still feel bad on the outside, but we underestimate the power of God to sustain, strengthen and comfort...from the inside. We can still soar. We can still rise above, if we are willing to listen and to learn.

“They that wait upon the Lord, will renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not grow weary, they shall run and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31

Teach me Lord to wait.
